This fun teacher-training tool is ideal for either quick staff-room sessions or longer training sessions. It is useful as a professional development activity for teachers new to the profession or seasoned veteran teachers. It has been used with numerous NQT and PGCE groups as well as during short CPD staff-room sessions. This editable 50+ slide PowerPoint features debates about teaching-practice, pedagogy, the nature of the education system and the politics of education. It also contains a ‘randomiser’ slide so that debate topics can be selected randomly. Debates take an ‘agree or disagree’ format: teachers/trainees are asked to move from one side of the room to the other depending on their response to the statements that appear. This format allowssession-leaders to foster debates and discussions between participants, it can be helpful to ask participants to justify their reasons and use sensible arguments. Questions you might ask include: “What is wrong with the other position in your view?”, “Why did you choose to stand where you’re standing?”, “Why do you think people disagree so much about this question?” It is best to encourage participants to pick a side rather than float in the middle: but it can also be fun to allow people to change side as the debate progresses, so that they can try to persuade one another to move. A non-subject-specific Christmas quiz, featuring 50 well-presented questions, and an answer sheet. The quiz also includes a word-search (on screen) and a couple of anagram rounds. The questions are all Christmas-related and not connected to a specific school-subject: it is, therefore, suitable for all teachers, or for form/tutor groups.
